Reverse Dictionary – Ever asked yourself “Whats the word for…”
I just happened to detect a reasonably interesting tool today.
I used to be attempting to find a word for “Individuals that are behind the times” for my previous blog post. I did a few searches in Google without avail and eventually started scouring for a tool that did a reverse lookup on a word. A tool where I would give the definition, and it might give me some words that matched that definition. What I discovered was Onelook.com’s Reverse Dictionary.
Reverse Dictionaries permit you to “Describe an idea” in order to search out words that match that description.
Cool Stuff, particularly for all of us non-harvard graduates.
What I find the foremost interesting though is all of the uses for this tool. It’s really a terribly smart search engine. You’d be suprized the kind of answers you could get from asking a selection of questions. Here are some of potential applications that OneLook describes:
– Find a word, when you recognize its definition, [or some of the definition].
– Explore connected concepts. Baseball, clouds, cities.
– Generate a list of words in some category. I.E. Massive Birds, Inexperienced fruit, Canadian authors.
– Answer basic indentification questions. What is the capital of Vietnam, Who is big birds friend on Sesame Street. What’s the longest River in the world
Essentially Onelook is indexing much a lot of then simply dictionaries to search out these answers. They index encyclopedia’s and other reference sites as well.
I dont know regarding you guys, however if I had a terribly giant quantity of cash, I may contemplate making an attempt to buy their technology. There are several times I would like the major search engines may do some of the stuff that they are. Ask.com (askjeeves) will a number of this, but you cant get lists from Raise, its sometimes websites that come back up that require you to sift through several pages to seek out your answers.
